Jason Licht’s Draft Track Record Sets Bucs Up for Another Big Night

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht enters with momentum and a mission. His track record is unmatched — and now, a lesser-known stat shows just how dominant he’s been in the draft room. Since Licht took over in 2014, Buccaneers draft picks from Rounds 1 through 5 have played more snaps and started more games than any other team in the NFL.

With the draft just days away, Licht’s next move could solidify Tampa Bay’s playoff credentials for years to come.

Ronde Barber Backs a Defensive Reboot

Hall of Fame cornerback Ronde Barber, who knows a thing or two about elite defense, believes the Bucs’ next draft class should focus on the back end. Speaking to CasinoBeat, Barber emphasized the need to tighten things up at the second level of the defense.

“They need to get better in the secondary — whether it’s the corners, the safeties, or just improving the pass rush that affects coverage,” Barber said. He praised the addition of Haason Reddick but hinted that more help is needed.

Coach Todd Bowles echoed a similar theme at the NFL Combine, spotlighting the need for ballhawks who can create takeaways and shift momentum.

Draft Day Targets: Edge Rushers in the Spotlight

Despite recent moves like signing Reddick and trusting in breakout performer Yaya Diaby, analysts believe the Bucs could still prioritize edge rushers in Round 1. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah is among those convinced Tampa Bay is eyeing pass-rush talent.

His top name? Donovan Ezeiruaku of Boston College.

“He’s productive, physical, and smart,” Jeremiah said. “He fits what Jason Licht looks for — he’s wired the same way Graham Barton was last year. That kind of maturity and football IQ matters.”

If Ezeiruaku is on the board at pick No. 19, don’t be surprised if the Bucs sprint to the podium.

Licht’s Legacy and the Road Ahead

Jason Licht may be the most underrated GM in football. His ability to find starters deep into the draft, along with his strong contract negotiations, has built a foundation that has produced playoff wins — and a Super Bowl.

Still, he isn’t one to rest on his laurels. With holes still to fill on defense and opportunities to strike value at key positions, the 2025 NFL Draft could be another masterclass.

And if Licht’s instincts hit again? It’s time to start the Ring of Honor conversation.
