Former Alabama standout JD Davison has reached a major milestone in his basketball journey. The 22-year-old guard was named the 2024-25 Kia NBA G League Most Valuable Player after an outstanding season with the Maine Celtics.
A Season to Remember
Davison led the G League in scoring, averaging 25.6 points per game while adding 5.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.4 steals. His contributions helped Maine secure the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Over the course of the season, he recorded 13 double-doubles, two triple-doubles, and scored 30 or more points in 15 games.
His dominance wasn’t just limited to the regular season. In the first round of the G League playoffs, Davison put up 38 points and 12 assists, leading Maine to a 115-95 win over the Capital City Go-Go. His all-around game and leadership have set him apart as one of the most impactful players in the league.
Celtics Organization Praises Davison’s Growth
Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens praised Davison’s work ethic and steady improvement.
“JD has embraced the idea of continuously improving, and we are thrilled for him,” Stevens said. “His hard work and team-first attitude have led to this achievement.”
Maine Celtics head coach Tyler Lashbrook echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Davison’s leadership and development.
“His commitment to his own growth is second to none,” Lashbrook said. “But what really sets him apart is his leadership. Winning the G League MVP is a testament to all of his hard work.”
From College Star to G League MVP
Davison’s journey has been filled with highs and lows. As a top recruit in Alabama, he was expected to be a lottery pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. However, after an inconsistent freshman season, his draft stock dropped, and he was selected 53rd overall by the Boston Celtics.
Rather than letting that setback define him, Davison has worked tirelessly to prove himself. Over three seasons with Maine, he has become the franchise’s all-time leader in points, assists, steals, and games played. His record-breaking performances have cemented his legacy in the G League.
What’s Next for Davison?
Many around the league believe Davison is ready for the next step.
“He’s an NBA player,” Celtics veteran guard Jrue Holiday said. “He’s doing everything he needs to do. I think he’s going to get his shot.”
Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla also praised Davison’s growth, particularly in his ability to impact winning.
With his MVP season solidifying his status as one of the G League’s top talents, the next question is whether he will earn a full-time NBA roster spot. As the Maine Celtics continue their playoff push, Davison remains focused on winning—but his future in the league looks brighter than ever.
