The San Antonio Spurs’ tough season has taken another unfortunate turn. Star point guard De’Aaron Fox has been ruled out for the remainder of the NBA season due to a finger injury that requires surgery. The procedure will repair an extensor tendon in his left fifth finger, and while the team expects a full recovery, Fox won’t return to action until the 2025-26 season.
Another Major Setback for the Spurs
Fox’s injury is just the latest in a series of major blows for the Spurs. Last month, rising star Victor Wembanyama was also shut down for the season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. On top of that, legendary head coach Gregg Popovich has been away from the team since November after suffering a mild stroke. With so many key figures out, the Spurs have had to battle through adversity all year.
Fox, who was acquired by the Spurs in February as part of a massive three-team trade involving the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls, is currently in the fourth year of his five-year, $163 million contract. Despite his setback, the team remains optimistic that he will return at full strength next season.
Where Do the Spurs Go from Here?
As of now, the Spurs sit in 12th place in the Western Conference with a 27-37 record, making a playoff push highly unlikely. The team has struggled in its last 10 games, going just 3-7. Their best hope for the future lies in the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery, set for May 12, where they currently have a 3% chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick.
With Fox, Wembanyama, and Popovich all unavailable, the remainder of the season will be about player development and assessing the roster for the future. While this season has been filled with challenges, the Spurs will be hoping to regroup, get healthy, and come back stronger in 2025.
