The 2025 Formula 1 season kicked off in dramatic fashion at the Australian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris emerging victorious in a rain-hit race full of surprises. The McLaren driver, who secured pole position, managed to stay composed in treacherous conditions to claim his fifth career win.
Max Verstappen pushed hard but had to settle for second, while George Russell secured a well-earned podium for Mercedes. Ferrari, however, had a day to forget as their bold strategy backfired, leaving Charles Leclerc in P8 and Lewis Hamilton in P10 on his Ferrari debut. The race also saw multiple crashes, with six drivers failing to finish.
McLaren Triumphs, Ferrari Fumbles
Lando Norris controlled much of the race, but the unpredictable Melbourne weather added an extra layer of difficulty. Both McLaren drivers briefly went off track as rain intensified in the final 15 laps, but while Norris recovered quickly, Oscar Piastri spun and fell down the order. Verstappen briefly took the lead, only to pit soon after, allowing Norris to regain control and secure the win.
Meanwhile, Ferrari’s gamble to keep their drivers on slick tires in worsening conditions proved costly. Leclerc and Hamilton both lost track position before finally pitting for intermediates too late, ending any hopes of a strong result. Hamilton’s much-anticipated debut for Ferrari turned into a tough learning experience, with the seven-time world champion admitting he struggled to adapt to the car in wet conditions.
Crashes, Rookies, and Unexpected Surprises
The chaotic race saw six retirements, including Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, who both crashed out early. Rookies Jack Doohan, Isack Hadjar, and Gabriel Bortoleto also failed to finish, with Hadjar’s race ending before the lights even went out due to a crash on the formation lap.
Among the standout performances, young Kimi Antonelli impressed by securing P5 for Mercedes after initially receiving a time penalty that was later reversed. Alex Albon took an impressive fourth for Williams, marking the team’s best finish in years, while Nico Hulkenberg’s P7 for Sauber was an unexpected highlight.
With 23 more races to go, this thrilling opener has set the stage for an intense 2025 season. Norris’ victory not only gives McLaren an early lead in the standings but also sends a clear message: he’s ready to fight for the championship.
